Exhibition Text

The group exhibition Aperture, monitor, field, mouth, language, at the Kunstverein für Mecklenburg und Vorpommern in Schwerin (31 October 2026–10 January 2027) brings together video installations, sculptures, photographs, and photograms by Keta Gavasheli, Danae Io, Chantal Kaufmann, and Jonida Laçi. Working from the relationship between body, space, language, and object, the artists develop interdisciplinary practices that make visible and shift habitual modes of perception and the power relations inscribed within them. Their works explore technology as an extension of the body and perception—from cinematic camera movements and photographic imaging processes to optical apparatuses—while reflecting on how images are produced, framed, and read, both historically and in the present. The exhibition’s title, based on a quotation by the writer Quinn Latimer, points in this context to the role of personal records and media instruments—cameras, monitors, and projections—as means of translating and interpreting the built environment. The text from which the quotation is taken draws on the first historically documented photographic image, Nicéphore Niépce’s View from the Window at Le Gras (1826). Within interwoven processes, images emerge that enter into narrative structures, but also at times resist resolution altogether. They shift along structures of repetition and move in loops, much like memory itself, in which meaning is continually reconfigured.

Miriam Stoney will write an accompanying text for the exhibition.
